Founded in 1987 by Director Paul Freeman, the Chicago Sinfonietta is dedicated to enriching the cultural state of Chicago. Other than performances in Chicago, the Sinfonietta has toured Germany, Austria and the Canary Islands and has performed at the Kennedy Center in New York. Its goal is to perform music by composers and soloists of color. Its guest artists have included the Vienna Boys Choir, Ben Vereen, reknown jazz pianist Marian McPartland and many others.
In more recent years the Sinfonietta has reached out to include such artists as Poi Dog Pondering, violinist Rachel Barton, the ever-versatile multi-instrumentalist Howard Levy and the great trumpeter Orbert Davis.
In its education and outreach program the Sinfonietta reaches out to the middle-school aged children in the Chicago Public Schools and introduces them to classical music.
Its annual calendar offers culturally diverse and interesting performances, including an Annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. Its venues change from Symphony Center to university concert halls. Check out the web site for information.
