In 1893, the Art Institute of Chicago moved from State Street to its present location. Even back then it was both a museum and a school with a simple goal: to acquire and exhibit art and to educate. Today the Institute's permanent collection houses work from the last 5,000 years and from all over the world. There's also a non-stop list of exciting exhibitions. There's even a Touch Gallery where you can actually feel as well as view a variety of statues. Under one roof you can go from ancient Chinese artifacts to classical masters and abstract expressionists. Ttake some time here to discover your favorite works and appreciate the craftsmanship and vision that makes the museum's collection among the finest in the world.

Best Bet:
There is no admission charge on Thursday evenings (5:00 to 7:00 pm)

Ed Ruscha and Photography Ed Ruscha and Photography
April 03 2008
March 1 - June 1, 2008
Since the beginning of Ed Ruscha's career in the late 1950s, photography has been both an inspiration and a source of discovery for this seminal Pop and conceptual artist. This exhibition, on loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art, presents his signature photographic books as well as approximately 115 original photographic prints, many of which have never before been seen or published. Displayed alongside the Art Institute of Chicago’s collection of Ruscha paintings, drawings, and prints, Ed Ruscha and Photography will create a powerful dialogue across mediums about the motifs and stylistic treatments that the artist first explored through photography.

Chris Raschka’s books beg to be read out loud. Bits of paper, splashes of paint, and zig-zag and twirling lines create pictures and texts that pop and sing together like the punctuated rhythms of poetry. Raschka maneuvers a brush or oil crayon with skill and swiftness, creating characters that weave through colors and shapes and dance upon the open background of a stage-like setting.
