Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as a major architectural asset to the City, the Museum of Contemporary Art is described as a building of cool, quiet distinction. Inside, modern culture is documented through sculpture, paintings, performance, video and film. The Museum's mission is to offer contemporary art to the public so that it may experience the work and ideas of living artists. To that end, the MCA offers a continuously changing series of exhibits, as well as a fifteen-hundred volume art library, a museum store, studio and classroom space and a 300 seat theater.

Heather Raffo's 9 Parts of Desire
Directed by Joanna Settle
Price: $23.00 - $38.00
Iraqi American writer and performer Heather Raffo brings her insightful performance to the MCA Stage. The work depicts the realities for Iraqi women, both under Saddam Hussein and since his expulsion. Iraq's tumultuous history has frayed and fractured these women's worlds, some beyond repair. Raffo, who performs all roles, spent 11 years interviewing Iraqi women on four continents to create this "theatrical mosaic" that reflects the conflicts, realities, and cultural shifts experienced by Iraqi women today

Hip-Hop Live + Reel Henry Chalfant: Style Wars and From Mambo to Hip-Hop:
Henry Chalfant's more recent foray into hip-hop documentary presents a panoramic view of the music that blossomed in the Latin community of the South Bronx from the late 1940's when mambo burst onto the New York cultural scene through the birth of hip hop in the 1970s. The film chronicles two generations who grew up literally on the same streets, and both used rhythm as their forms of rebellion - for the older generation it was the pulsating rhythms of Cuba, and for their children it was the rhythms of rap.

Karen Kilimnik
From: February 23 2008 To: June 08 2008
This exhibition is the first significant presentation in an United States museum of the artist Karen Kilimnik, a key figure in contemporary art who emerged during the late-1980s and early-1990s. Acclaimed first for her so-called “scatter art” installations of various bits of pop cultural detritus strewn about a gallery space to create a sensibility somewhere between the Postminimalism of Robert Morris and Barry LeVa and the backstage of a fashion preview, more recently she has become recognized for paintings that combine art historical tradition, modish topicality, and an awkward intimacy and fragility.
