11th Annual Summer Opera, Handel’s Acis and Galatea This summer, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) presents its 11th Annual Free Summer Opera, Handel’s Acis and Galatea. Handel’s most popular dramatic work, Acis and Galatea, offers a feast of gloriously melodic music and an escape into a mythological world. Fully costumed and staged, the opera will be performed in English and accompanied by members of the New Millennium Orchestra of Chicago. Music director Francesco Milioto will lead the performance from the harpsichord. Joanie Schultz, an exciting opera and theater director, will stage direct. |

15th Annual Kwanzaa Observance Program The largest known seven-day celebration of Kwanzaa in the country publicly held in an institution of higher learning. The event will include performing artists, public speakers, cultural activities, and regional vendors. The event remains free and open to the public.

A Jazz Nativity for The Anti-Cruelty Society Music and animal lovers alike can celebrate the holidays with Saint Luke Church, at its Annual not-to-be missed “A Jazz Nativity.”
Resident "cat" Chaplin Smith will help officiate the day with festivities beginning at 3:00 pm.
Pets are invited to attend.
The nativity story will be performed by a lively group of top Chicago Jazz Artists that include: Bobby Schiff, Bobby Lewis, Ken Jandes, Jerry Coleman, Andy Tecson, Tim Coffman, Stew Miller, Ken Olen, Gayle Bisesi, Dawn Holt Lauber, Dave Molnar, and Bill Tadevich.
Prior to and following the performance, The Anti-Cruelty Society will host a Holiday Bazaar, and showcase some of their adoptable pets. Pastor Dave Abrahamson will also conduct pet blessings. |

AIDS Run - Walk Chicago AIDS Run & Walk Chicago is a fundraising event in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Participants will be asked to pre-register for the 5k Run or Walk and raise additional money through pledges.
The 5k Run and 5k Walk will be held along Chicago's scenic lakefront. Runners and walkers will be treated to sponsored course entertainment, water/aid stations and a post event concert by top-name, national entertainment. |

Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove Ever have the dream of playing on the field with professional baseball, football, basketball or hockey players? Thirty members of the public will have a unique opportunity to have their dream come true -- at least in the world of professional cycling -- when they can compete with cycling pros participating in the third annual Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove cycling event in Elk Grove Village, Ill. |

Bastille Day 5K Run The popular mid-summer Chicago event will again be a celebration of all things French as well as that country's Bastille Day National Holiday (Officially July 14). In 2011 the run/walk celebrates its 30th anniversary (!) as well as its new home in Lincoln Park which, until 2010, had been in the West Loop.
Following the run/walk, participants will be treated to a block party with food, refreshments and entertainment at the nearby Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. (Admission to only the block party without participation in the run/walk is $5.00) Proceeds will again benefit Chicago's Mercy Home for Boys & Girls. |

Chicago Criterium Get ready for Chicago-style pro-am cycle race!
Mayor Richard M. Daley welcomes cycling's elite to Grant Park on Chicago's beautiful lakefront for the city's inaugural Chicago Criterium on Sunday, July 27. Racing will begin at 7:00 am, and continue through the day. The total prize money is $40,000 with $25,000 of that marked for the Pro Category 1& 2 race, the final race of the day starting at 2:25 pm. |

Chicago's Memorial Day Parade The Chicago parade is considered one of the largest Memorial Day parades in the nation. Since 1870, Memorial Day parades have graced the streets of Chicago. In 1997, Mayor Richard M. Daley made it an annual tradition as a day to be thankful that we live in a country where freedom, justice and democracy are proudly defended. |
