On November 27, 2008 Daley Plaza will transform itself into a little piece of Germany, known as the Christkindlmarket Chicago. This transformation has been taking place every Holiday season since 1996; and the entire world is invited to witness it. Visitors from as far away as Turkey, Ireland, Mexico and, of course, Germany, flock to the market.
It is estimated that more than 1 million people attend each year. At the Plaza, visitors will find that the Picasso, which towers over the plaza, will be surrounded by red and white crested huts glowing with warmth and overflowing with curios. Nutcrackers, cuckoo-clocks, beer steins, European chocolates, toys, jewelry, clothing and a wide variety of holiday ornaments are just a few of the items for sale from more than 50 vendor booths.

During the market, the air around the Plaza fills with sweet and succulent aromas wafting from spiced wine and roasting nuts. These treats simmer alongside many other delicacies including potato pancakes, bratwurst, schnitzel, stollen, strudel, pretzels, and much more.
German beer and hot spiced wine flow from several locations throughout the market. Visitors can even sip wine from their very own boot-shaped, collectable Christkindlmarket Chicago mug. The beer is not the only product from Germany.
Many of the sweets and handicrafts and even 65% of the vendors themselves are flown in from Germany, thus visitors have the unique opportunity to learn more about German language and culture. It is features like this that keep Chicago’s market authentic.
The German American Chamber of Commerce, which hosts this event, oversees thousands of similar details to ensure the Christkindlmarket Chicago’s traditional atmosphere.
