It’s a real firehouse built in 1905 in the neighborhood where Marshall Field and the hotel magnet Potter Palmer lived in elegant mansions. And it’s quite an elegant place itself. The walls are covered with colored tiles, fireplaces are found in each dining room and arching windows rise from floor to ceiling. The Chicago Firehouse is a place for delightful dining in a charming turn-of-the-century atmosphere.

Start out your wonderful dinner occasion by having something new. If you haven’t had escargot, this is the place to finally try it. At $10.95, it comes smothered in garlic butter, panko bread crumbs, plenty of squirts of lemon, shallots, and even brandy. Or pay $9.95 for frog legs pan seared in butter and garlic. Even though the cuisine is considered American, these taste as good as you will find in France.

For $57.95, the Chateaubriand for Two comes with a mind numbingly good eighteen ounce cut of prime Grade A beef accompanied by a twice baked potato, asparagus and bordelaise sauce. For people fond of pork chops, you’ll forever be happy you ordered the Mango and Chili Barbecued Pork Chop. It’s slow roasted with braised cabbage, apples, dried cherries sauce and includes whipped maple sweet potatoes - outstanding at $21.95.
