This is the classic restaurant and cocktail lounge where, as one writer put it, "the two martini lunch is alive and well." Soft lighting, whispered conversations drift up from booths upholstered in luxuriant red leather. Long stemmed martini glasses dot the bar. This is a sophisticated room where women can still be seen in black satin cocktail dresses and the power lunch is replete with gentlemen wearing diamond studs in their French cuffs.

General Info
The Coq d'Or opened for business the night of December 6th, 1933 – the night Prohibition came to an end. A glass of whiskey was forty cents and the bar had two-hundred thousand gallons of that long-forbidden beverage on hand to accommodate the rush of people who poured through its doors. Today, as stock quotes flash across a bar screen, the business of Chicago is done over the specialty of the house – The Executive Martini – made with eight ice cubes, poured from a brandy snifter; a drink savored while local musicians play jazz and blues nightly at the piano bar.

If you are planning to dine here, we recommend the blue-ribbon mint crab cakes for $12.00 as an appetizer. If you love wine, and have the means to indulge that passion. Try the Opus One, Mondavi-Rothschild from Napa. This $247.00 bottle is packed with the scent of roasted almonds and you will enjoy the gentle taste of plum and cherry. At $54.00 a bottle, Sonoma’s Simi rivals any Cabernet Sauvignon with a lingering cherry flavor. At $10.00 a glass and $39.00 a Bottle, the Château Souverain from Alexander Valley is a steal of a Merlot. And the Buena Vista from Cameros at $44.00 a bottle will satisfy any Pinot Noir fan.
