For 50 years, Papa Milano’s, tucked away at the corner of State and Oak, has been serving the locals Italian food that many of the bigger, trendier Italian restaurants in town can only dream of preparing. The place is small and the tables are jammed so closely together wind would have trouble getting between them. The walls are done in standard issue wood panel, the kind you find in basement recreation rooms, and the pictures on the walls have that distinct paint-by-the-numbers flair. You might say Papa Milano’s is anti-ambiance.
This is a little “joint” just off the Gold Coast serving pizza and pasta: Gnocchi, linguini, spaghetti, rigatoni and angel hair. Everything is fresh, every day. The pasta is rich in taste, the sauces thick and hearty, the salads so fresh they gleam. And the portions – prepare to eat! Just to give you an idea, the eggplant Parmesan is literally layered with eggplant sauce and gooey cheese. Exclaimed one diner, “It’s incredibly inexpensive for the portions you receive.” At Papa Milano’s it’s always Sunday dinner the way Mama intended it – a feast! |
